Two kinds of building, two kinds of sign
Oxford splits neatly for a signmaker. There are the older stone frontages in and around the centre, where lettering has to be small, considered and reversible. Then there are the research and business parks out towards Cowley and Littlemore, where buildings are modern, elevations are large and a name has to read from a car park.
We make both. Fabrication happens at our Marlow Bottom workshop, and our own installers do the fitting.
What we make
For laboratory and office campuses, the usual answer is powder coated aluminium letters with a decent depth of return, fitted to a rail so the alignment holds across a long name. For shops and smaller frontages, flat cut metal or built-up acrylic gives depth without bulk. Illumination gets added where the site trades into the evening.

How we work in Oxford
Access into the centre needs planning. Once the price is agreed, we visit to work out where the van can stop, how long we have and what access equipment fits the pavement. Central work is fitted Monday to Friday as standard, and an early morning start can be arranged on request, at extra cost.
On the science and business parks the constraints are different. Site inductions, permits, controlled areas and occasionally clean room adjacency. We supply risk assessments and insurance certificates on request and work to the site rules. Where a building is in use, drilling is scheduled around the occupants rather than around our diary.
Coverage
Oxford is a regular run for us from the Marlow workshop, and we cover the surrounding towns and villages on the same journeys. For clients with several sites, the whole set is handled from one drawing pack and one point of contact.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. We draw the whole family first, agree letter heights, colours and fixing details, then roll it out building by building. Working from one specification keeps later additions consistent instead of drifting over the years.
Powder coated aluminium is the most durable for the money and holds colour well. Marine grade stainless is excellent but shows fingerprints and grime at low level. Painted acrylic is fine externally if the paint system is right, and we specify accordingly.
Yes. You get a scaled drawing showing sizes, positions on the elevation, materials, finishes and fixing method, plus a visual on a photograph of the building. That is normally enough for facilities, marketing and estates teams to sign off together.
Better to paint first. If that is not possible we can fit on locators and remove them for decoration later, though each removal and refit costs time. We will sequence it with your contractor if the two jobs overlap.
Yes. Old letters come off, fixings are removed, holes are filled and the surface is made good as far as the finish allows. On a rendered or painted wall we can touch in. On stone we will be honest at survey about what will still show.
